Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to challenge specific decisions from the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
